Why do people go to the movies in the first place? This course will attempt to explain why movies have played an important role in the lives of so many people. What makes movies so alluring? Why do certain movies “stay” with us? To answer that question, we will follow a clue provided by acclaimed director Vincente Minnelli, who said, “I feel that a picture that stays with you is made up of a hundred or more hidden things. They’re things that the audience is not conscious of, but that accumulate.” This course will identify some of those “hidden things” that make movies so memorable.
Participants must view films ahead of class discussion. Participants will be responsible for watching the films in advance of each week’s class discussion. The cost to rent each of the films ranges from free to $3.99. One of the five films is available on Youtube.com at no cost. Rental fees for the remaining four films will cost approximately $20 total.
