Pioneer Life on Glass Road Trip

The Balcom-Green collection of black and white photographs makes a significant contribution to our understanding of the history and settlement of the central Great Plains by providing an intimate look into Nebraska’s past. The collection of some 1200 glass plate negatives of life in central Nebraska from the mid-1890’s to the 1920’s is housed at the Cairo Roots Museum, Cairo, Nebraska

This day trip will take us to Cairo to see some of the glass negatives as well as photos developed from the negatives. Bill Burdett, Horizons without Bounds and the Sandhills Journey National Scenic Byway, a rare blend of cowboy and scientist, will tell the story of how the negatives were found and are being preserved and displayed at the museum.

Lunch will be at Medina Street Vault with continued conversation with Bill. Participants will cover the expense of their own meals.

Frank Lloyd Wright Home and More Road Trip

On this day trip to McCook, we will tour the Harvey P. Sutton House, a home designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, his first and only design in the state of Nebraska. You’ll hear the story of how the house was designed and built and its history over more than 100 years.

Following the tour, we'll have a self-pay lunch at Sehnert’s Bakery in downtown McCook, a James Beard-award-winning bakery that has been in McCook since 1957.

We'll follow lunch with a visit to the 6th Floor Project, an art gallery that fills the 6th floor of the Keystone Business Center, a renovated historic hotel. The gallery includes art from Najavo and Hopi artists as well as from Creative Growth Art Center, Oakland, California, a non-profit that encourages people with developmental disabilities to express themselves through art. Several artists in the collection have gone on to worldwide renown.
