When CRT and 1619 hit the news, the topic of race in America became hotly debated, seldom with any recourse to our writers whose role is depicting the world around and within us. This course will look at one white southern and one black northern writer to see how they depict race in America and whether their depictions are similar. After an introduction to the topic on opening day, we will read one story a week in this order: Faulkner’s “Dry September,” Baldwin’s “Going to Meet the Man,” Faulkner’s “That Evening Sun,” Baldwin’s “Sonny’s Blues,” and Faulkner’s “Red Leaves.” Please note the change in stories!
