Ideologies, Identities and Alternate Realities: Political Parties in Transition

Two political parties that dominate American politics seem to be changing. Perhaps you’ve noticed the Democratic Party seems more progressive these days and the Republican Party’s historic conservatism seems to be in tension with a newfound populism. The divide between the parties feels larger and politics seem more angry than they used to. This class explores the causes and implications of the changes within and between our major parties. We’ll begin with the origins of the two-party system in American politics, trace the changes in policy platforms and supporting coalitions over time and dive into the values that make politics liberal, conservative, populist, plutocratic, democratic, social democratic and authoritarian, all at the same time. Whether you love political parties or hate them, they are part of our democracy, so it’s important that we understand them. As usual, we will strive for an open exchange of ideas that respects our differences while looking for ways to bridge them.

This class may be attended in person or accessed via Zoom. For in person class, masks must be worn and seating will be assigned (6’ apart). Hand sanitizer will be available.
