The Classic Hollywood Era & Its Stars

We will study five Hollywood movies made during the Classic Hollywood Era (1930-1945) when the American studio system reached the peak of its economic and cultural power. The films made during this period are the single most important body of films in the history of the cinema, establishing the terms by which all movies made, before and after, would be seen. The class will include City Lights (1931), Camille (1936), Now, Voyager (1942), Casablanca (1943) and Meet Me in St. Louis (1944). After the first class meeting, participants will screen the films on their own for discussion at the following week’s class.

This class will not meet on March 24
