RIP: Death and Cemetery Culture

Death plays a starring role in human society. In this class, we examine cultural practices regarding cemeteries and death in the United States and around the world. Among other topics, we will discuss issues of cemetery organization, structure and management, grave marker design, burial rituals and practices, funeral options, dealing with death and grieving. Dr. Wadkins has been teaching a course on Death and Dying for 25 years. She has had an interest and/or fascination with cemeteries her entire adult life. Dr. Lilly conducts research on multi-ethnic cemeteries as sites of ethno-religious and national conflict in the form Yugoslavia. She also teaches a course on this topic.

Students for this class should be sufficiently mobile to participate in field trips to local cemeteries and should also be prepared to take photographs that they can send to faculty and perhaps other students.
